The US Department of State also says the United States, Japan and other countries that are concerned about the Rohingya are under surveillance. More could be added in the next few months, the State Department’s director for regional affairs, Andrew Rothbaum, told US News.
“With this growing concern, including with regard to other countries, we’re looking to further support law enforcement efforts that are aimed at stopping terrorist attacks in our region,” he told USN. He added that all embassies have in place the same laws against terrorism and extremism that apply to other countries.
But it will also be several years before Rohingya are officially considered citizens of Myanmar, as a further complication for Chinese travel. The government, however, is currently looking into China’s “safekeeping” of Rohingya.
State spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said on the State Department’s online news channel that “all Rohingya are to be considered refugees and are asked only for permission to return home.”
But China’s embassy in Myanmar told a reporter this means the Rohingyas must return home. A spokesperson for the State Department said in October, however, any such returnees would first be asked for permission.
